Increasing Graduation Percentages
Wisconsin started Pre-Kindergarten in 1984, to tackle the Achievement Gap. Longitudinal data does not show the desired results from this program. However another method of increasing graduation rates it to lower graduation requirements.
“Graduation Requirements

Science – 3 Credits
English/Language Arts – 4 Credits
Social Studies – 3 Credits
Civics Requirement – Yes
Physical Education – 1.5 credits
Health – 0.5 credits (in grades 7-12)
In addition, as specified in s. 118.33(1)(am) ), the state superintendent shall encourage school boards to require an additional 8.5 credits selected from any combination of vocational education, foreign languages, fine arts, and other courses.” (https://dpi.wi.gov/graduation/requirements)
Different states have different graduation requirements.
- Minnesota
- Course Credits
“Students complete the academic standards by taking a core course of study that equips them with the knowledge and skills they need for success in postsecondary education, highly skilled work, and civic life. To graduate, your child’s high school coursework must include at least the minimum state course credit requirements. Course credit is equivalent to a student successfully completing an academic year of study or mastering the subject matter, as determined by the local school district. Students must complete a minimum of 21.5 course credits…”https://education.mn.gov/mde/dse/gradreq/
